      <image:title>Pillow Volunteers</image:title>
<image:caption>“After having had three successful open heart surgeries at the Royal Jubilee Hospital over a span of 27 years, I decided that I needed to do something useful with all the “wonderful” experience I had gained as a patient. I had been given pillows after two of my surgeries and I knew how much they meant to me, so I decided that I wanted to deliver those pillows too. Not only do I get to drop off the pillows, but I also get to engage with patients, answer any questions they may have about the recovery process, and share whatever experience I have that might be helpful. It is extremely rewarding to know that you are helping to make someone else’s journey a little bit easier. Visiting days are honestly the brightest days in my calendar!”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Investment policy - ‘No’ to Big Tobacco</image:title>
<image:caption>The First Open Heart Society recently took a proactive stand against ‘Big Tobacco’, as we passed a Socially Responsible Investment Policy to ensure that any investments of the society do not in any way support the tobacco industry. Taking the lead from Physicians for a Smoke Free Canada (PSC), the policy dictates that any funds invested are consistent with the society’s mandate of supporting cardiovascular patients. The Board recognizes that it is inconsistent to invest, no matter how indirectly, in tobacco companies, and the sales and production of tobacco products, as such investments provide revenue to these companies to promote their product: a product identified by Health Canada as known to be one of the leading causes of premature death in Canada, specifically, death caused by cardiovascular disease application.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Financial assistance policy</image:title>
<image:caption>FOHS provides financial assistance for individuals preparing for or undergoing a prescribed cardiovascular medical procedure. The Board annually sets aside a sum of money for eligible individuals to cover costs for whom financial hardship arises as a result of the need of a cardiovascular medical procedure. Please be aware the available funds are limited, as the Board’s primary goal is the long-term sustainability of Heart House, and this initiative must not place this priority at risk. Eligibility for financial assistance is determined by criteria identified by the application process, which is restricted by regulations to ensure we maintain our non-profit charity status. If you are concerned about not being able to participate in a prescribed cardiovascular medical procedure because of costs, contact us, we can help .</image:caption>
